On Sunday, October 20, 2024, Lugazi Cathedral Parish joyfully celebrated the Fourth World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly, a special occasion established by Pope Francis to honor the invaluable contributions of the elderly and foster intergenerational bonds within families and communities.
The celebration centered on the theme “His mercy is from age to age” (Luke 1:50), highlighting the role of grandparents and the elderly as custodians of faith, wisdom, and tradition. The event reminded society of their dignity and the importance of nurturing strong family connections.
The day began with a thanksgiving Mass, attended by families and parishioners who came together in solidarity with their elderly relatives. In addition to the spiritual celebration, a series of activities enriched the day, including:
- Recognition ceremonies that honored exemplary grandparents within the parish.
- Intergenerational dialogue sessions, where young people listened to and learned from the life stories of their elders.
- Cultural performances that showcased the rich heritage passed down through generations.
- A charity drive that provided support to elderly members of the community in need.
The parishioners actively participated by bringing their elderly loved ones, volunteering in various activities, and contributing generously to the charity drive. The celebration not only strengthened family ties but also promoted the values of respect, care, and gratitude toward the elderly in the community.
The day concluded with joy, unity, and a renewed appreciation for the blessings of grandparents and elderly family members, leaving lasting memories for all who attended.
